‘To All the Women’ has taken nearly 5 long years to complete. In fact it’s still not finished! Currently on display at Stockyard Gallery in Foster for the ‘See the Song’ Exhibition & I will continue to work on it after the exhibition closes. It was important to me to hang the artwork in this particular exhibition as music is a major element in my painting process.
It is usually a time/headspace/emotion & the music I am playing in that period that inspires an artwork for me. It can be one particular song or a playlist that hits me & I will see an image or concept in my head of the artwork as a whole. Then I need to work out how to bring all the elements together to bring it to life. In the process of painting a piece I start a playlist & add any song I hear that captures that same feeling for me that I am trying to paint. Music, art, & emotion go hand in hand for me. When these elements work together they can change your whole being.
I actually didn’t realise this was my process until a very sweet lady sent me a message one day with a link to Tash Sultana, saying her music reminded her of my artwork - how intriguing! When I looked through the playlist of the huge artwork I had just finished I found 5 Tash Sultana tracks!
The concept that someone had visualised my art when hearing the music I’d been listening to when painting blew my mind & has stuck with me ever since. I am still amazed when someone points to one of my artworks & says ‘This reminds me of that band’ & they will be spot on!
So how do I put into words what this artwork is about?
‘To All the Women’ is a huge mural painted in acrylics & aerosols on canvas.
It’s taken such a long time to bring all the elements together as I tended to work on this one only when I was bringing my best self & loving energy. I wanted this piece to bring the sunshine & warmth to other woman, that I have needed on my darkest days.
It is about the collective support from other women who help lift you up when you have lost yourself.
The elements & symbols I’ve used represent strength, hope, faith, self-worth, self-love, & finding your way again when you have hit rock bottom.
This artwork is painted as an energetic symbol against dominance & oppression, making room instead for women to lead the way forward with kindness & care for others.
I have a personal goal to be able to afford to have many prints of this mural made up to be able to gift to women's shelters to have on their walls.
